JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Girls flag football officially opened in February, with heavy hitters including Fleming Island, last year's state championship favorite. Flag football head coach Clint Lyons, who has been with the program since 2014, emphasizes efficiency and recognizes that his players participate in multiple sports. I'm particular about it.''
Looking back on the team's past accomplishments, Lyons said, “We made it to the state title game once, made it to the Final Four twice, won the district championship four times, and won the regional championship twice.” After falling just short in the state tournament last season, the Golden Eagles are on a mission this year to focus on honing their strengths, especially their formidable defense.
“Everything looked like a machine. No snaps, no short passes. Everything was on target,” the Lions said of their last state game. The team, which boasts an impressive defensive record allowing just six points per game, believes its defense will be the key to success at the state level.
Senior wide receiver and running back London Jenkins praised Coach Lyons, saying, “He's a very smart coach. He knows the game so well that he does things that other coaches don't usually do or don't see. “I like the way he plays. He notices other gaps.” No other coach would do that. ”
Senior linebacker and running back Gabi Musa expressed confidence in the team's defense, saying, “Our defense so far this year has been solid. We've been good. We're just going to stick together.”
