Jacksonville, Florida โ The First Coast YMCA partnered with Farrar & Farrar to host a special event Saturday morning at the Winston Family YMCA in Riverside to discuss the importance of learning how to swim.
Saturday was designated as National Learn to Swim Day, dedicated to educating parents and children about water safety.
“It's important to us to educate not only children, but adults and everyone about the importance of water safety,” said Darya Farah, an attorney at Farah & Farah.

From 2018 to 2020, Florida had the highest accidental drowning rate in the nation for children ages 0 to 9, according to the Florida Department of Health.
“Studies show that formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of drowning by 88%,” said Delonix Cortez, associate VP of swimming programs at First Coast YMCA.

Cortes also said that if parents don't know how to swim, the chances that their children will learn are greatly reduced. Therefore, learning how to swim is equally important for adults and children.
