Former Pakistan cricket team captain Saeed Anwar's controversial views on women's empowerment and the resulting increase in divorces have gone viral on social media. In a video posted on social media, Anwar can be heard saying that divorces have increased by nearly 30 percent in Pakistan over the past three years. He tied it to more women entering the workforce in the country. In his sexist rant, he also added that women are financially independent and decide to run their households according to their wishes. The video attracted a lot of criticism from users on social media.
“Since women started working in Pakistan, the divorce rate has increased by 30% in the last three years,” Anwar said in a video that went viral on social media.
“Wives say, 'I can earn my own money no matter what.' I can run a household on my own.” This is the whole game plan. “If we don't find guidance, we won't understand this strategy,” he added.
Anwar also said he sees similar patterns around the world, where families suffer as women enter the workforce.
“I've traveled all over the world. I just came back from Australia, Europe. Young people are suffering, families are in dire straits. Couples are fighting. The situation is so bad that they are losing money. We have to make women work for us,” the former Pakistan cricketer is heard commenting in the video.
Anwar also made the shocking revelation that New Zealand captain Kane Williamson and an Australian mayor had also raised similar concerns before him.
“Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, called me and asked me, 'How can our society improve?'…An Australian mayor said to me, 'Ever since women entered the workforce, our culture has improved. 'was destroyed,' he said further.
