The new Trier High School football program has always been known for its emphasis on set pieces and restarts. The Trevians took numerous chances in that scenario, handing the Evanston Township High School girls soccer team its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon at Northfield.
New Trier scored twice in the first 20 minutes on headers from Basie Shannon and Josie Noble for a 2-0 win over the Wildkits in the Central Suburban League South Division.
This is the first time all year that the Kits, who are currently 10-1-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play, have conceded multiple goals in a single game. New Trier moved to 11-2-3 and 1-0-2 in the CSL South.
Evanston got plenty of practice in dead-ball situations Saturday. Maybe that's what Kitts needed if there is a rematch between the two rivals in the postseason.
“We know they value set pieces, and we know the importance of them. We can win games with set pieces,” Evanston head coach Stacey Salgado said. “That's one of New Trier's strengths.
“I don't think we played as well as we could today. The new Trier won the ball in the air, but we also couldn't control the midfield. They came up with a good game plan and it worked. It's obvious.
“Overall, we played better in the second half, but we didn't create as many scoring chances as we could. We have a lot to work on.”
The new Trier's high-pressure approach paid off with an early corner kick chance, and Shannon found the net against ETHS goalkeeper Shea Lucas in the fifth inning.th Minutes.
Fifteen minutes later, with the Wildkits struggling to get the ball out of their own end, a restart that started with a shot taken by New Trier's Annie Padden near the corner flag resulted in Trevian's second goal. Brought.
Evanston's forwards received few touches in the first half, and New Trier freshman keeper Annie Fowler needed just three saves to get a clean sheet. The Wildkits put together a brief offensive flurry midway through the first half as Jocelyn Lee's creativity led to back-to-back corner kicks by Alexandra Merriam.
However, during that attack the away team did not have a shot on goal. Shots from Sydney Ross (14 minutes left) and Lee (just before the end) missed the target for ETHS.
