Skaters and hockey players can escape the heat this summer and practice their skills at the Meridian Exhibition Centre (MEC).
For a $5 fee, skaters can bring their hockey equipment and participate in MEC's Sticks & Pucks program, which runs from 12-3 p.m.
Charissa Friesen's children attend Sticks & Pucks regularly.
“[M]”The kids love coming in the summer,” she says. “One of my sons is in pretty rigorous goalie training right now, so he needs some time on the ice, and this is a great way to get him on the ice.”
Friesen's son, Jude, likes to help train his brother as a goalie, and when the two join the Sticks & Pax program, they work on “shooting and edge work,” Jude said.
Rome Lowen, another young hockey player, said he likes winter hockey but also enjoys playing in the summer.
“I think it’s going to be a great time here with my new friends. [and] “It's fun to meet new people,” Loewen said. “It's a good way to cool off in the summer.”
For Friesen, the Sticks & Pucks program has several benefits.
“for [my sons] “It's always important to have fun on the ice,” Friesen said, “and this is a great option to just come and join in with your friends, without having to usually rent ice every time.” [it’s affordable] To get on the ice.”
Friesen said while her kids are practicing hockey or skating, she walks on the MEC track to get some exercise, which helps her stay warm in the summer heat.
“I actually prefer the side with the rink,” Friesen said, “because it's nice and cool here.”
The next Sticks & Pucks event will be held on July 16. Participants under 11 must be supervised by an adult and the event is cash only.
For skaters, the MEC also hosts public skates, usually held on Saturdays from 5pm to 7pm.
MEC considers the Drop-In Skate Program a pop-up event, continually adding activities based on facility availability.
Please check the MEC calendar regularly for changes and updates.
