Enid's soccer team made a memorable debut Tuesday with a convincing victory over Woodward in its first varsity game at the Advance Soccer Complex.
The girls team won 2-0 with goals from Bailey Ross and Tabitha Miller in the second half. The boys shutout the Boomers 5-0. With this sweep, Enid's record was tied at 1-1.
Valeria Gutierrez assisted on Ross' goal and Vanessa Real assisted on Miller's goal. Goaltender Bree Lamoreaux made four saves.
“It felt good,” Enid coach Tim Lavoie said. “We were able to move the ball well and make extra passes to open guys. We made the ball work for us.”
The field, which is about 15 to 17 yards longer than Selby Stadium, worked in the Pacers' favor, Lavoie said.
“It takes a lot of effort to get a shutout,” he said. “I'm glad I won for the first time.”
Diego Chavez and Jonathan Gomez scored twice for the Plainsmen in the first half, and Ethan Ritchie scored on a quick restart in the second half.
Enid coach Jorge Cabada, who was sitting in the stands because of his suspension from Friday, said his team was more creative than Friday, when it lost 2-1 to Moore on penalty kicks.
“We gave them practice painting beautiful canvases,” he said. “We give them creativity and free flow.”
Cavada said goaltender Jonathan Wallace made a “tremendous save” in the first period when the game was still scoreless. Jose Camarena had a shutout in the second half.
The only downside is senior defender Sebastian Gutierrez's ankle injury, which could keep him sidelined for some time, Cabada said. Oswaldo Herrera is expected to come off the injured list when Enid hosts Crooked Oak in a girls vs. boys doubleheader Friday at 6 p.m.
