Former Tulane fourth-year guard Zion James has one year of eligibility remaining and may be on the verge of signing after touring Duke's basketball facilities on an official visit this weekend.
Within the past 24 hours, Blue Devil head coach John Scheyer followed James on Instagram. The last player to follow the 36-year-old was former Purdue forward Mason Gillis, who just so happens to be the latest of two players acquired from the portal this offseason.
Additionally, the Duke basketball program's official X account also follows James. Of the three transfers so far to gain followers from the Blue Devils, two have pledged allegiance to Scheier & Co. in Gillis and former second-year Syracuse forward Malik Brown.
Another player who received a following from Duke this offseason is former Stanford forward Brandon Angell (senior), who has committed to the University of Oregon. Therefore, predicting the commitment of a program's followers on social media is not a perfect science.
Still, despite the fact that 247Sports' Crystal Ball does not include the winner of the Theon James sweepstakes, the buzz on social media in recent days is that the 21-year-old will be joining the Blue Devils' third portal. Scheyer's third roster, which he notes is likely to win the award, currently consists of 10 scholars (not counting James yet).
As a senior at Tulane University, the 6-foot-6, 220-pound James averaged 14.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.6 steals in 36.7 minutes per game. He was a full-time starter for the Green Wave in each of the past three seasons.
