NEW CONCORD โ East Liverpool's boys middle distance crew is running on a record pace.
The Potters qualified for state in four events, the most in the last 50 years.
“This group of kids is a once in a lifetime group.” “It's a great opportunity for us to get to know each other,” East Liverpool boys track and field coach Andy Miller said.
East Liverpool junior Julius Jones broke the school record in the 800 meters for the second straight week, winning the Muskingum Division II regional title on Saturday.
His time of 1 minute, 54.97 seconds was more than two seconds faster than his district-winning time.
He was part of the 1,600 relay team with juniors Gavin Wright and Quintin Conrad and sophomore Maddox Roach, which took third place in a season-best time of 3:25.43, tying the school record.
Roach also advanced in the 1,600 meter dash, with Beaver Local junior Jeremiah Moore taking third place (4:24.68) and Roach taking fourth place (a personal best time of 4:26.47).
The top four will advance to the Division II state tournament this Friday and Saturday at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.
On Thursday, Potters High School's 3,200 relay team (sophomore Brody Vulgamore, Conrad, Roach and Jones) placed fourth at the regional meet in a time of 8:07.49, qualifying them for the state meet – 11 seconds slower than their personal best and a second and a half slower than the school record.
“They compete against each other in practice.” Miller said. “They take turns running. They go back and forth and are able to get great times in events over 200 metres. They're very competitive and very focused, so it's paying off.”
The Potters recorded the fastest time at the regional meet.
“We lost a lot of time.” Miller said. “We have a good team. We're focused on practice and seeing what happens in the postseason. Seed time is not the same as finals time.”
Jones' 800-meter time is one of the best in Columbiana County history, but it came just one year after U.S. champion Caleb Nastali set the Ohio state all-time record with a time of 1 minute, 48.31 seconds.
“We were a bit spoiled and I'm from United so I think the kids were tired of hearing me talk about him.” Miller said. “They don't realize that he's like the LeBron James of high school athletics.”
Jones qualified for the state meet with the sixth-fastest time.
“They said the Nastali era was approaching.” Miller said. “I said don't rush into it, the podium is next weekend.”
Miller said he hasn't been to Welcome Stadium, site of this year's state tournament, while the resurfacing work is taking place at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
“I think not being at Ohio State will take away a little of the glitz and glamour, but it's exciting to be able to go anywhere.” Miller said.
