Syracuse, N.Y. — Sports Authority stores in Destiny USA will be closed or sold as part of the company's plan to close or sell approximately 140 of its 463 stores.
On Wednesday, sporting goods retailer Sports Authority filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The company, which is struggling to pay off debt, plans to close or sell its 140 stores and two distribution centers. At least 87 of those stores are already up for sale. Destiny USA stores were included in the Wall Street Journal's list of stores up for sale.
The Syracuse store was one of four stores listed for closure or sale in New York state.
Sports Authority said in its bankruptcy filing that it evaluated the profitability and “viability” of each of its 464 stores in 40 states and Puerto Rico before identifying which stores would close. In the filing, it said up to 200 stores and two of its five distribution centers could be closed.
Sports Authority's Destiny store is the company's last remaining location in central New York. He closed the Claytown store in 2014.
Sports Authority opened at the mall in 2005, occupying space previously occupied by Eastern Mountain Sports and the former Ames Department Store. The mall has not had a full-line sporting goods store since 1994, when the bankrupt Herman's World of Sporting Goods left.
