At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Dalla Torres became the oldest swimmer to compete in the Olympics. She took home three silver medals, including a heartbreaking 50m freestyle race where she missed out on gold by one-hundredth of a second. America loved her all the more for her amazing accomplishments and for her good-natured acceptance of her results.
Dara competed in a total of five Olympics and won 12 medals throughout her Olympic career. Her impressive performance in Beijing and her bid for the 2012 London Olympics inspired many older athletes to consider re-entering competition. In November 2019, Dara joined other legends Candice Cable (para-alpine skiing, para-nordic skiing, para track and field), Lisa Leslie (basketball), and Nastia Liukin (gymnastics) at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Games. Inducted into the Hall of Fame. Misty May Treanor (beach volleyball), Apolo Anton Ohno (short track speed skating), Erin Popovich (para swimming), Chris Waddell (para alpine skiing, para track and field), 1998 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team, John Carlos (Legend: Track and Field), Tommy Smith (Legend: Track and Field), Ron O'Brien (Coach: Diving), Tim Nugent (Special Contributor).
In addition to her impressive performance in the pool, Dara is also talented on land. She has appeared on shows such as Fox News, ESPN, CNN, Piers Morgan Tonight, Today Show, Good Morning America, and Kelly and Regis. Additionally, Dara was the first female athlete to be featured in Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue and won the ESPY Award for Best Comeback in 2009. In addition to her Dara honor, she was also named one of the “Top Female Athletes of the Decade” by Sports Illustrated Magazine.
Now a best-selling author, her memoir Age is Just a Number: Achieving Your Dreams at Any Stage of Life was published in April 2009 and by June was one of the top 25 best-selling business books. It was mentioned. Her second book, Gold Medal Fitness: A Revolutionary 5-Week Program, was a hit in May 2010 and is now a New York Times bestseller.
