The Dallas Cowboys have undergone a major backfield shakeup over the past two seasons with the departures of Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott. Ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Cowboys' top returning running back is Rico Doodle, who has amassed 96 carries, 385 yards and two touchdowns in four years at the pro level.
It's clear Dallas will need to consider adding room later this month, and the franchise is doing its due diligence.according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys will bring in former Florida State star running back Trey Benson for the Top 30 team's visit Wednesday through Thursday. His trip will coincide with former Texas running back Jonathan Brooks.
Benson and Brooks are considered two of the top prospects at their respective positions. Perhaps one of them will be the first running back to leave the roster later this month. Both would be good options to add alongside Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner. That said, it might be hard to overlook Benson, who had two productive seasons in Tallahassee and had some eyebrow-raising performances at the NFL Combine and Pro Day.

The Mississippi State native bounced back from a serious knee injury suffered at Oregon State and totaled 310 carries, 1,896 touchdowns and 23 touchdowns in two years with the Seminoles. Benson scored 14 points in 2023, tied for seventh in single-season rushing scoring in program history. He was named second-team All-ACC both seasons at Florida State.
Benson played in four games against Florida and Miami, helping the Seminoles to a 4-0 record and showing off his best performance. He rushed 70 times for 414 yards and 10 scores while playing for the Hurricanes and Gators.
Benson, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds and had a broad jump of 10 feet, 2 inches while weighing 216 pounds at the NFL Combine, only moved up the rankings compared to other running backs. At his state pro day in Florida, he bench-pressed 225 pounds 23 times, and at his position in Indianapolis, he would have tied for fifth among participants.
Dallas holds three picks within the top 100, meaning the franchise could acquire Benson. The Cowboys currently have the 24th, 56th and 87th picks at their disposal.
