middletown, connecticut. – Wesleyan’s men’s ice hockey team lost 3-0 in non-conference action to Curry College on Saturday afternoon in its home opener against Spurrier-Snyder Rink. patrick morrissey '25 and DJ Dixon In '24, he led the team from the faceoff circle and defense.
The Colonels (5-2-1 overall) claimed the puck and commanded the puck as well throughout the first period, outscoring the Cardinals (2-2-0 overall, 2-0 NESCAC) 15-10, but with no goal. I was only able to get one more inside shot. 9 wins and 8 losses over the Cardinals. Both goaltenders finished the period with eight saves, but the Colonels scored first. Wilhelm Patriksson, who won the puck in the neutral zone, crossed the puck from the right post across the goal crease to Jakob Crespo, scoring his first goal at 17:07.
The Cardinals controlled offensive possession throughout the 20-minute second period and entered the second period with even more pace. They held each other scoreless, and the Cardinals evened out the shots with a 13 point difference. Both the Colonels and Cardinals made sure to kill one penalty each. mark smith '24 and Shane Soderwall appeared on both ends of the ice with 13 saves. The Cardinals came from a tie to defeat the Colonels, winning eight points in the second period.
Less than five minutes into the final period, Ryan Prewitt deflected the Colonels right in front of Smith and stole the ball from Matt Conner at the blue line on his first shot. The Colonels' final goal was an empty net goal given by Jesse Galassi. Despite a late goal by the Colonels, the Cardinal maintained momentum with the man advantage in the final minutes as Smith was brought in as an extra attacker. When the puck comes back into the empty net. daniel lurie '26 made a save deep in the Cardinals' own half, keeping the game afloat.
Dixon won 10 of the Cardinals' 22 contests, as Morrissey finished with six total shots against Soderwall.Morrissey added Kyle Anderson '24 and owen sweet '25 was also 5 attempts.
Smith finished the afternoon with a goal and 27 saves. Soderwall scored 33 points.
The Cardinals will return to action on Sunday, November 26th, hosting Boston, Mass., in a non-conference game starting at 3:00 p.m. at the Spurrier-Snyder Rink.
