The groom, dressed in full wedding attire – dhoti, kurta and headdress (mukut) – was seen queuing at the entrance of the Barshapara Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, along with his wedding procession. There, Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be played on Sunday. This scene attracted the attention of the match participants.
In a conversation with News18's Assam correspondent Bipul Burman, the groom Arup Acharya said that although today was his wedding day, “cricket is more important to me than marriage.”
“I support Kolkata Knight Riders. In the northeastern states, we rarely watch IPL or international cricket matches. If I miss this match, I won't be able to enjoy it again, so I decided to ask my father-in-law. I asked him to postpone the wedding by one day.”
The groom arrived from Dharma Nagar in Tripura with a 'Bharati' (wedding procession).
“I promised my father-in-law that I would be on time for the wedding on Monday, May 20. So, after watching the match, I would take the train back to Dharmanagar by 1 a.m., just after midnight.” the groom said. He further said:
The news of Bollywood actor and superstar Shah Rukh Khan's appearance at the stadium also drew large crowds to the stadium in the northeastern state. Riyan Parag, a local Assam boy who plays for Rajasthan Royals (RR), is another attraction for the audience.
The stadium authorities have also reserved a specific room in the premises for Shah Rukh Khan so that fans can have a glimpse.
Chief ministers of several northeastern states and Assam Governor Golub Chand Kataria will also be present during the match. More than 40,000 people are expected to attend the stadium, which has a seating capacity of just 36,000.
