Coy Chapman is “totally” Gordo.
The cliché suggests that he bleeds green and gold. In fact, he is fully “invested” in Gordo High School as an instructor and coach.
On Tuesday morning, Chapman was introduced as the new head coach of the Gordo men's basketball team.
“I've played here. I feel invested and I care about that. I want to get back to where I feel like I can play Gordo basketball,” Chapman said.
Chapman returned to Gordo High School four years ago as a mentor and coach. He served as his assistant coach for the Green Wave's football, basketball and baseball.
When Gordo principal Mark Capp offered him the head basketball job, Chapman didn't hesitate.
“At a place like Gordo, when a head coaching job is open and you're the one the principal calls, it's kind of a big deal. I felt like it was a no-brainer,” Chapman said.
Chapman graduated from Gordo College in 2017 after a storied athletic career. He excelled as a three-sport student-athlete, including setting a passing record as quarterback for Green's Wave his football, and helped the school take home the Class 3A baseball state title in 2017. contributed to.
In basketball, Chapman helped Gordo qualify for the regional tournament in 2016. This was Green's last appearance in a regional tournament for his wave.
The basketball team lost in the Class 3A subregion in 2015.
“I get kind of excited when I think about Gord basketball and where it can happen,” Chapman said. “Like I said, when you get a head coaching job at a place like Gordo, where there's a community that's invested, and you're one of the players they're considering, that's an honor in itself. is.”
Coaching is done in the Chapman family. Coy's father, Jamie, is a former Gordo football assistant coach. Chapman's younger sister, Haley, is an assistant Green Wave girls basketball coach, and his younger brother, Beau, was the offensive coordinator for Jasper High School football last season.
