An anonymous SEC defensive coach shared his opinion on Georgia State quarterback Carson Beck, offering high praise for the college football star.
Georgia is looking to return to the College Football Playoff this season after narrowly missing out on a playoff berth one season despite going undefeated in the regular season and losing only one game to eventual playoff qualifier Alabama. Expectations are high in Athens, in part because Carson Beck returns as the starting quarterback after an impressive first season as a starter.
Beck is currently considered the Heisman Trophy front-runner and the favorite by many to be the No. 1 overall pick in next year's 2025 NFL Draft, but it's not just the NFL that sees him that way — SEC defensive coaches agree.
The Athletic published an article where college coaches shared their thoughts on the 2025 quarterback class, and SEC defensive coordinators spoke very highly of the Georgia quarterback.
“I think he'll be the No. 1 overall pick,” one SEC defensive coordinator told the outlet. “Playing against him, a few things really stood out. He's a better runner than you'd think. He doesn't run a lot, and he's quick on his release. He gets through the run with a lot of speed. And he's really smart. He's one of the few quarterbacks that doesn't look at the sideline all the time. We had a zero (blitz) and he got you into a screen really quickly. Really impressive.”
That wasn't the only thing being said about Beck, as another defensive coordinator also weighed in, explaining just how impressive Beck has been on the field.
“He played great against us,” said a DC from a Top 25 team. “He has the look of a prototypical first-round QB. His touch on the deep ball is great. I don't think there's a better quarterback in the country right now in terms of size, accuracy and accuracy on the deep ball. I think he throws the deep ball better than Jayden Daniels.”
In 2023, Beck threw for nearly 4,000 yards, completed over 70% of his passes with just six interceptions on the season. He is one of the top players to watch in the country this season and a big reason why many believe Georgia will be a contender to win the national championship.
