POTSDAM, N.Y. — Earning a spot in the women's Frozen 4 with four overtime games was the perfect way for Clarkson to spend the longest game in program history.
On Saturday, the fourth-seeded Golden Knights defeated fifth-seeded Minnesota 3-2 to make their first appearance in “Frozen 4” since 2019. The victory was not easy, however, as Clarkson never held the lead until he scored the winning goal. 4th overtime.
The Golden Gophers' 2023-24 season ended with a total record of 27 wins, 10 losses, and 2 draws. The Golden Knights will compete next week at the women's Frozen Four in Durham, New Hampshire, with a chance to win the school's fourth national title (2014, 2017, 2018).
Sophomore Josephine Buben scored the first goal for Minnesota. She picked up the rebound and flicked it past Clarkson netminder Michelle Pasiechnik. A few minutes later, Buben made a pass across the crease to Ella Huber, increasing the Gophers' lead to 2-0.
Clarkson responded with a power-play goal from Haley Wynn late in the first period. The Golden Knights then tied the game with an additional goal from Dominic Petry just before regulation ended, sending the game into overtime with the score tied at 2-2.
Petry finally scored the winning goal on the power play in the fourth overtime, sending his team to the Frozen Four.
Goaltender Michelle Pasiechnik made 62 saves in Clarkson's win, and Minnesota's Lucy Morgan made 53 saves.
