Third-seeded Cape Henlopen High School defeated No. 14 Mount Pleasant 3-1 on Wednesday night in the opening round of the DIAA boys volleyball state tournament.
The Vikings won 20-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-19, advancing to Saturday's state quarterfinals. Defending state champion Cape Henlopen (13-2) hosts his No. 1 Brandywine Saturday at 2 p.m.
Cape Henlopen was led by Bryce Patterson (15 kills, 1 ace, 1 block, 6 digs), Tyas Small (15 kills, 2 blocks, 5 digs) and Talan Stevens (2 kills, 2 aces, 12 digs, 45) He fought at the pace of assists).
Indian River 3, Conrad 0: The seventh-place Indians (9-6) have qualified for Saturday's quarterfinals and will play second-place Wilmington Charter (14-1) at 2 p.m.

Sussex Academy 25, Odessa 5: Shelby Manlove had seven goals and two assists in the fourth-seeded Seahawks' win in the first round of the DIAA state tournament on Wednesday.
Sussex Academy will play fourth-seeded Ursuline in the quarterfinals on Saturday at noon. The Seahawks also featured Shea Dunahy (5 goals, 2 assists), Elizabeth Leighton (4 goals, 3 assists) and Emily Bissaha (4 goals, 1 assist).
