Spring break is approaching in Mexico's Caribbean region, and new tourists are already arriving in search of the vacation of a lifetime.
The region is known for having some of the best coastlines in the world, and visitors come for its gorgeous white sand beaches and beautiful blue waters.
Not to spoil the atmosphere, but new cases of pollution have been reported by environmental groups on some of Cancun's most popular and picturesque coastlines, causing some concern for tourists, hoteliers and officials. .
New report on contaminated swimming water
If there's one thing Cancun is known for, it's its world-famous beaches that draw millions of tourists during the peak winter and summer seasons of the Mexican Caribbean.
Unfortunately, Daniel Gustavo Rodríguez Lozano, president of the Snorkeling and Litter Association, reported that fecal contaminants were found in the hotel area of Cancun, both on the beach and in the marina.
After being reported in both January and February of this year, the federal government is now on high alert and warning tourists to remain vigilant.
The most likely culprits of the waste problem are thought to be tourist catamarans, which release sewage during their voyages.
Inclement weather over the past two weeks has caused sargassum to appear on Cancun beaches earlier than expected due to strong winds..good…The waste from these ships is sorely missed by everyone.
This is not a new problem. In 2023, 200 incidents of contaminated water from sewage and faeces were reported, mainly in urban areas of Quintana Roo.
reason?
Rodrigue Lozano said: “Wells that are not connected to drains are poorly connected, leading to direct contamination of aquifers (sediments that hold groundwater).”
What is being done regarding this issue?
This Sunday, a meeting of local officials will be held in Bacalar to discuss a number of issues, including environmental ones, and come up with solutions to combat them.
Once a solution is developed, it will be submitted to the government, which is expected to take appropriate action on the issue.
This really makes sense. Tourist catamarans should not be allowed to release waste into the sea, especially near tourist attractions such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
In addition, improved drainage systems need to be built, as hotspots in Quintana Roo are reporting these problems year after year.
Mexico and the Caribbean are experiencing an unprecedented tourism boom, but swimming in fecal-contaminated waters can be disappointing in and of itself, something hoteliers and officials don't want. It's not there.
Beaches affected by the issue have already been issued with tourist warnings and may be temporarily unavailable while the issue is addressed.
