BROSSARD, Quebec — The Montreal Canadiens had some business on Tuesday.
Hours after Arbel Shekay agreed to a new contract, the club also announced it had signed fellow restricted free agent defenseman Morgan Barron.
Both players signed two-year contracts, with Jekai making $2.6 million and Baron making $2.3 million over the course of the contract.
The hard-hitting Jecai appeared in 44 games for Montreal last season, recording three goals and 10 points. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Hamilton native led the team with 81 penalty minutes and was tops among Canadiens defencemen with 125 hits.
Jeckai has eight goals, 23 points and 182 penalty minutes in 95 career NHL games. The 23-year-old Jeckai will appear in 17 games with the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League in the 2023-24 season, recording three goals and 11 points.
Barron recorded seven goals and 13 points in 48 games with the Canadiens last season. The right-handed defenseman added 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in 32 AHL games.
Since making his professional debut during the 2020-21 season, the 22-year-old Halifax native has recorded 12 goals and 30 points in 94 NHL games with Montreal and the Colorado Avalanche.
Acquired in the Artturi Lehkonen trade with Colorado in 2022, Baron was the Avalanche's 25th pick in the 2020 draft.
Jecai originally joined the Canadiens in October 2021 as an undrafted free agent.
