College of Charleston won the 2023 CAA Men's Basketball Tournament last year, defeating UNCW 63-58 in the championship game with a late comeback. The Cougars swept through the CAA in February and are on a seven-game winning streak.
The Cougars' last loss of the 2023-24 season was on Feb. 1 against UNCW, making them the only program to beat the Cougars twice in CAA conference play. If Charleston can ride their momentum, they could win back-to-back CAA Tournament titles and make March Madness history.
The 2024 CAA Men's Basketball Tournament is expected to feature some tough competition from several programs, with No. 1 seed Charleston following closely behind. Introducing the teams participating in the CAA Tournament.
CAA Men's Basketball Tournament 2024 Predictions
Here are some teams that could win the CAA Championship and make it to March Madness.
College of Charleston (22-7,13-3)
Charleston men's basketball defeated UNCW in the championship game to become the reigning tournament champions and earn their sixth NCAA appearance in school history. The Cougars have been consistent throughout the year, and their recent winning streak in February vaulted them to the No. 1 seed in the CAA rankings. Charleston had a similar performance last year, winning 20 straight games en route to qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.
Head coach Pat Kelce, who took over in 2021, turned Charleston into a mid-major school to watch in March. The Cougars have yet to advance past the first round of the NCAA Tournament, losing 63-57 to No. 5 seed San Diego State last year. If Charleston repeats and wins the CAA Tournament, it could be a Cinderella story heading into the NCAA Tournament.
UNC Wilmington (20-8, 11-5)
UNCW is one of the teams competing for the No. 2 seed in the CAA standings as the regular season concludes. The Seahawks have won the CAA Tournament title as runners-up for the second year in a row. In 2023, UNCW lost to Charleston in the finals, 63-58, and in 2022, they narrowly lost to Delaware, 59-55.
The Seahawks are looking to bounce back and are showing signs of being a team that can make a splash come March. UNCW defeated Kenlackey 80-73 on the road earlier this season and is also the only team to beat Charleston twice in CAA conference play this year. UNCW has a top-scoring offense this season led by Trazarian White, averaging 81.1 points.
Trazarian White is a household name heading into March and has been leading the way for UNCW all season. White ranks fourth in the CAA in scoring, averaging 20.0 points while shooting 50 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range. Those are dramatic improvements from his sophomore season, when he averaged 14.2 points and shot 28 percent from 3-point range.
White and graduate Shykeim Phillips, the Seahawks' second-leading scorer, will need to continue producing at a high level if this team is to make it through the tournament.
Drexel (18-11, 11-5)
Drexel is aiming to return to the CAA Championship as it competes for position in the CAA rankings with other top-seeded teams. The Dragons' most recent CAA title came in 2021, defeating Elon 63-56 in the final to win the title for the first time in school history. After earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, the Dragons lost 78-49 to Illinois in the first round.
This season, Drexel has established itself as the top team in the CAA with a seven-game winning streak in the CAA Conference in December, and also had a notable win against Villanova in the preseason. Last season, Drexel was ranked No. 5 in the CAA and advanced to the second round of the CAA Tournament, but ultimately lost to UNCW.
Head coach Zach Spiker has done a great job of turning Drexel back into a winning program, winning three consecutive seasons for the first time since 2005. With the right matchup from a tournament seed, this Drexel program could get back to his CAA Tournament championship game.
Hofstra (18-11, 11-5)
Hofstra ranks atop this year's CAA rankings behind the nation's No. 3 scorer, Tyler Thomas. Thomas is averaging 22.4 points, leading the CAA with a 42% FG percentage and 36% 3-point FG percentage. Junior guard Darliston Duvall (6'8) has also contributed to the Pride's success this year, averaging 17.7 ppg.
Hofstra defeated Northeastern 70-61 in the final to win its first CAA Tournament title in 2020. After receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, Hofstra lost 61-48 to UCLA in the first round.
Boasting two of the most talented scoring guards in the CAA and a conference-high 37% 3-point shooting percentage, Hofstra is a team to watch in the CAA Tournament.
