Calexico — Calexico High seniors and Bulldog football players Cristian Jesus dela Fuente Amezcua, Leo Canchola and Luis Angelo Alcala all sign letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at CETYS University in Mexicali did.
“This is a very good opportunity for them to continue their education, which is most important, but also continue their football,” Calexico Bulldogs head coach Fernando Solano said Friday on the campus of Calexico High School. From bulldogs to foxes, this year's garnet and white for Calexico High School will be next year's black and yellow for CETYS University's Zorros, and the three Calexico transplants couldn't be happier. The student-athletes head to Mexicali on four-year scholarships.
The 17-year-old Amezcua expressed his gratitude for signing with CETYS Universidad, saying that not only will he be able to continue playing soccer, but he will also be able to “be closer to his family and friends,” adding that he wants to go home often to play. . Amezcua has graduated and he said he hopes to one day play at the professional level in Mexico.
Leo Canchola, also 17, is from Mexicali and transferred to Calexico High School as a freshman. A freshman at Calexico High School at the time, he wasn't new to the gridiron. Involved in the sport since he was 6 years old, Canchola used his speed and strength to play a variety of positions, eventually alternating between running back and linebacker. Canchola hopes to one day earn a starting position on the field while graduating with a degree in renewable energy from CETYS University.

Luis Angelo Alcala, 18, a Las Vegas native, moved to Mexicali after the pandemic and transferred to Calexico High School. Alcala, the second person in his family to attend college, excitedly shared his thoughts.
“It's going to be very exciting because you're going to have friends, you're going to have relationships, you're going to meet new people, you're going to meet new personalities. It's going to be a lot of fun and great,” he said. Alcala's dream is ultimately “to be able to support a family,” he added.
