THORNTON – The 4A and 5A Boys Swimming and Diving State Championships are in the books following three days of great performances at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center. Silver Creek and Cherry Creek were named overall team champions at the state tournament.
In 4A, Silver Creek junior James Story won the 200 freestyle title and the 100 freestyle title. Silver Creek also had senior Steven Codevilla win the 100 backstroke. University of Windsor senior Jake Eccleston won the 100-meter breaststroke for the third year in a row, setting a state meet record (53.67 seconds) in the process, but that record was broken later in the weekend. Nevertheless, Eccleston's 4A record still stands. The Windsor senior also won the 200 IM title. Evergreen junior Duncan Salmen won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while his teammate and fellow junior Carson Harrington won back-to-back titles in the diving.
Throughout the 4A meet, one meet record was broken and three top-10 marks were achieved in all events. Silver Creek won its third boys swimming and diving team title and first since 2021.
In 5A, Eli Hobson set his own state meet record in the 100 breaststroke (53.58) and won the title shortly after winning the 50 freestyle crown. Cherry Creek junior Luke Ogren repeated as the 5A diving state champion, and Cherry Creek senior Brody Johnson won back-to-back titles in the 100 butterfly. Fellow Bruin Colin Miklecki of Cherry Creek won the 100 freestyle championship. Grand View junior Oliver Shinberg won the 100 backstroke for the second year in a row. Cherry Creek was king in the relays, winning state titles in all three events.
Over the course of the 5A meet, one 5A and overall state meet record was broken and seven top-10 marks were achieved in all events. Cherry Creek won its 13th boys swimming and diving CHSAA team championship (second all-time across all weight classes) and first since 2021.
Individually, University of Windsor senior Jake Eccleston won his third consecutive 200 IM title and third consecutive 100 breaststroke title. Evergreen junior Carson Harrington and Cherry Creek junior Luke Ogren were both repeat state diving champions in their respective weight classes. Cherry Creek senior Brody Johnson won his second 100 butterfly championship and Grand View junior Oliver Shinberg won his second 100 backstroke state title.
