CLA 3, Honokaa 2
The Christian Liberty Academy boys varsity volleyball team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Honokaa High School at Hamakua in five sets.
The Dragons drew first blood and narrowly won the first set 25-23, but the Canefire fought back and outscored HHIS 25-11 in the second frame.
Honokaa regained the lead with a narrow 25-22 win in the third set.
With the match in jeopardy, CLA tied the game in the fourth set and won the fifth set 15-11.
The Cane Fire (1-1) went five sets in its previous two matches this season, losing 3-2 at home to Parker School (3-0) last week.
CLA will have a long break before their next test – which is scheduled for March 30th at home against Kohala High School (1-0).
The Dragons, who are off to an 0-1 start, will make their next trip and first road test Saturday at Kaw High School. Saturday will be the first of three away games on Honokaa's upcoming schedule. The Dragons' next home game is March 27th against Kanu O Ka Aina Charter (0-3).
The St. Joseph School JV team also played at HHIS on Tuesday, defeating the Dragons JV team 2-0 (25-21, 25-11).
KSH 3, Waikea 1
After a big weekend of preseason tournaments, Hawaiian Warrior School jumped straight into BIIF play as the home-standing Kamehameha School, defeating Waiakea High School 3-1 on Tuesday in Puna.
KSH took control from the start, winning the first two sets 25-18, 25-15. Waiakea remained undaunted, winning the third set 25-20 and staying in the game, but KSH dominated the fourth frame 25-13 and shut it out.
KSH's attack was led by a group effort with Roho Boshard with nine kills, Kahili Pareka with eight kills, Kahai Helm with seven kills, and Kawohi Hoihoi and Nainoa Paio each with six kills.
Karena Rauniu had 17 assists and Lansin Apigo led the KSH defense with 13 goals.
KSH (1-0) returns to action Saturday morning at home against Kealakehe High School. Waiakea's next matchup is also Tuesday in Kona against the Waveriders.
