NEW DELHI: The Indian Cricket Board is looking for a new coach to take charge after June's T20 World Cup, but has left the door open for Rahul Dravid to reapply.
Dravid, who took over as head coach of the men's team in November 2021, was given a short-term contract extension after his two-year contract expired after India lost to Australia in the ODI World Cup final last November.
“We will invite applications in the next few days,” Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), told reporters in Mumbai.
“Rahul Dravid's term ends in June. If he wants to reapply, it is possible.”
Shah said the next coach would be offered a contract until the next ODI World Cup in 2027, ruling out the possibility of hiring different coaches for the three formats.
“We are looking for a long-term coach for three years,” Shah said in comments reported by Indian media on Friday.
“There is no precedent in Indian cricket to have different coaches for different formats. Besides, we have a number of all-format players. Ultimately it will be a call for the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). I have to carry out their decisions.”
India have not won a world title since the 2013 Champions Trophy and will aim to end their drought at the T20 World Cup, to be held in West Indies and the United States from June 2.
Rohit Sharma's side will begin their fixture against Ireland on June 5th, before a close game against arch-rivals Pakistan in New York on June 9th.
