Manchester United are considering selling Mason Greenwood this summer, with Barcelona touted as a possible destination after he enjoyed a strong season on loan at Getafe.
Barcelona have reportedly told Manchester United that the signing of Mason Greenwood is far beyond their budget.
Barça have been touted as one of Greenwood's possible transfer destinations this summer. His career at United was all but over after the club carried out an internal investigation into the striker.
The incident comes after the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges against the Briton of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He then joined Getafe on loan this season and achieved solid results for the La Liga team. They hope to keep him beyond this summer, but his form is said to have caught Barça's attention.
However, Greenwood's chances of moving to Camp Nou have now taken a big hit. Earlier this week, United's director of football, John Murtagh, and head of negotiation, Matt Hargreaves, met with Barca's sporting director, Deco, in Barcelona.
According to Mundo Deportivo, one of the topics discussed was Barça's interest in Greenwood. Although he is not high on the Spanish side's list of signings, the Spanish side are interested in the 22-year-old.
United bosses are said to have asked Barça how far their interest extended and told them about the £51m tag on Barça's head. However, there was a negative reaction to this revelation.
Instead of suggesting that Barça could match such a high sum, Mr. Deco is said to have ruled that Barça should not pay such a high sum. He reportedly claimed that Barça would not make a bid and that the £51m would be out of budget.
The backlash from Barca comes after United's new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe appeared to open the door for Greenwood to return. The striker will not take part in the club's pre-season tour, but Ratcliffe insisted he has yet to make a decision on the 22-year-old's future.
“We will take a decision, that's right. All I can do is talk about the principles of how to approach such a decision. Is he the right type of footballer, is he good? Are we satisfied with whether it's human or not?'' Ratcliffe said.
“He's a Manchester United footballer, so we're responsible for the football. So the answer is: 'Yes, we have to make a decision. Obviously we have to make a decision. Nothing has been decided yet. do not have”
“He's obviously on loan but he's not the only one. We have one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision so we will do that. The process is as follows Get the facts, not the hype.
“Then try to make a fair judgment based on values. The bottom line is: Is he a good guy? Can he play with integrity for Manchester United? We are happy with that. Can we do it, and will our fans be happy with it?”
