Australian batsman Will Pucovski suffered a severe blow to the head while playing for Victoria in the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania here on Sunday and had to be substituted.
The No. 3 batter was hit on the helmet by Riley Meredith's bouncer and left the game with an injury. This was the second throw he faced in pursuit of Victoria, which scored 442 points in the second inning.
The 26-year-old has suffered a number of blows to the head, most recently in the second round of Eleven in January when he was hit on the left side of his helmet as he faced a rising shot from Meredith.
The blow left him visibly shaken as he fell to his knees on the pitch. Medical staff rushed to the center. Eventually he stood up and slowly left the field, rubbing his eyes.
A Cricket Victoria spokesperson said: “Will is currently in the care of medical professionals.” “We will provide an update in due course.”
Reserve hitter Campbell Kellaway came on as a concussion substitute.
Pucovski returned from a knockout in January and scored 131 points in the Shield game against New South Wales at the SCG last month.
He has battled with “mental health” issues in the past.
“Mental health was a much bigger issue for me than the concussion,” he said on the Big State Cricket podcast. “I'm not worried about my long-term health. It's more about my mental health.”
The right-hander played one Test match against India in January 2021.
