Clark County High School, 18 years old, 3rd year student
Sports: Soccer. Position: Defender.
Parents: Marcy Shinaberry and Chris Shinaberry
Birthplace: Berryville
What do you like about soccer?: I love the competitive nature of soccer. I play defense, so I love defending people and moving the ball. I think it's a really fun, team dynamic sport.
Most memorable soccer moment: Winning state last year. (Clark County went 24-0 with him and won the Class 2 title.) The team bonded and it was a lot of fun.we all have to take the bus there [to Salem]and the boys went with us [Clarke County advanced to the title game in Class 2 boys’ soccer]And we ended up just hanging out and all playing soccer together. I don't get to see the players very often during normal seasons, so it was fun to support them. And it's a really fun dynamic after we win and that's helped us play together this year.
Most embarrassing moment in soccer: Falling down a lot. I was in a tournament and was running fast when I tripped in front of me. I fell face first into a lawn chair and suffered a concussion. This was my freshman year.
Toughest moment in soccer: When my travel team almost disbanded at the end of my sophomore year, I practiced with the local travel youth team in Clark County and remained with the team for the past year. I was definitely the worst player there. It was difficult. It made me push myself harder than ever before. I was the slowest, so I always chased the ball with all my might, but the boys were stronger. I had to work for it and I wanted to. It was a very difficult time both mentally and physically. They definitely helped me become the player I am today. I got better at playing with them.
The person I can have dinner with, dead or alive: My grandmother. [Peg]; She always makes me laugh and tells me the best stories. I love hearing about her younger days and how she's the same age as me. And my family. I just enjoy being with my family. [My immediate family includes] my mother, my father, my twin sister [Avery, Clarke County’s goalkeeper] and my brother [Zac, age 15].
Biggest athletic influence: My first travel coach, Darin Niemann. He taught me from 3rd grade to 1st grade. He always supported me and really pushed me as a player and told me I could do anything if I put my mind to it. He has encouraged me a lot both in my sports career and as a person.
Favorite teacher: Ms. [Jamie] Coleman. I had a girlfriend this year and her 10th grade year. She always supported me and helped me achieve what I needed in my studies. If she hadn't been able to work independently with me this year, I wouldn't have been able to get Honors English. I really appreciate everything she has done for me. She spent so much time helping me with my English. She is such a good person and I really love her both as a teacher and as a person.
Favorite movie: “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”
Favorite TV show: “Stranger Things”
Favorite song: “Counting My Blessings” by Sef Schlueter
Favorite food: Mom's green tater tot casserole
Worst thing you've ever eaten: Meatloaf
Plans after high school: (Cinaberry plans to play soccer at NCAA Division III William Penn College of Technology in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.) I want to major in welding. We have a comprehensive welding program. I love being able to create things. I love using my hands.I grew up always helping my father and me. [grandfather] Install drywall in the basement and cut tiles. We made a steam shower together. I always grew up in an environment of hard work and doing something to make something. I was drawn to this job because I feel I have a pretty good work ethic. I love how everything about welding works. I love seeing puddles form when I'm welding. I think it's very fascinating to see it all come together.
