Arlington high school teams have been kicking off their soccer season in recent weeks, with each team having mixed success.
The Washington Liberty Generals girls and boys teams each won their opening games against the Annandale Atoms by a score of 2-1 in non-district play.
The boys team won at home with goals from Evan Oberkirsch and Max Gerber. Assisted by Caleb Layton.
Garber's goal was unassisted and broke a 1-1 tie with the Washington Liberty dominating the ball for much of the game.
Bryson Halverda and Marcelo Carrasquillo shared the goal time.
The Washington Liberty Boys are an experienced team this season, with 13 seniors on the roster.
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the WL girls scored two goals in the second half to beat Annandale.
• The Wakefield Warriors are 1-1-1 after three games in boys non-district play.
The Warriors won 3-0 against the Jefferson Colonials, lost 3-1 to Lewis, and tied 2-2 with Alexandria City.
Against Jefferson, Eric Vazquez-Ayala scored two goals and Lavand Akwari had another. Assists were provided by David Perea, Vike Dawson and Rhys Shara. The Warriors led 2-0 at halftime.
Against Alexandria City, Tate Caalejo and Jacob Peel scored goals, and Brady Keefe and Mike Santos had assists.
Against Lewis, Andrew Soto scored Wakefield's goal on a penalty kick.
The Wakefield girls are a young team that includes only four seniors: Helena Helms, Kristin Guillen, Ella Morales and Adeline Harrold, and opened the season with a 2-0 victory over Lewis.
Ms. Helms played on the Wakefield girls basketball team during the winter and was named an All-Liberty District selection for her work. This fall, the busy Helms was also a starter on Wakefield's girls field hockey team, along with Harold, Guillen and Morales.
• Each Yorktown Patriots team has a roster that includes nine seniors this spring, but they struggled to win early with the boys going 0-3 and the girls 1-2.
Both teams have been perennial contenders for district, regional and state championships in the postseason in recent seasons.
The boys team lost 2-1 against South Lakes, 2-1 against Robinson and 4-1 against Madison, but scored in all three games.
The Yorktown girls opened the season with a 3-0 win over South Lakes, but lost the next two games to Robinson, 3-1, and Madison, 3-1.
The upcoming game date between the three Arlington teams is April 18th when the Yorktown and Wakefield teams will play. WASHINGTON – April 26 when Liberty and Wakefield meet. Then, on May 7th, WL and Yorktown will clash. Each team only plays him once in each regular season game.
The WL and Wakefield boys teams are coached by brothers Jimmy Carrasquillo of WL and Eddie of Wakefield, making this matchup a little more interesting.
