Class A Semifinals: (4) Greece Arcadia 26, (1) Webster Thomas 20
Thomas entered the Class A semifinals with an 11-0 record. When Arcadia played Thomas in the regular season, Thomas won 21-0.
But none of that mattered Thursday night. Arcadia scored the winning touchdown in the final minute of the game to defeat the top seed and advance to the section championship game.
With less than a minute left on fourth down and the score tied at 20, Ashanti Caton lofted a pass to a wide-open Kaitlyn Spring, who caught the winning point.
Thomas had some heroics of his own late in the game, when Katherine Rogers found Makella O'Neal in the end zone for a 20-14 lead, then tied it with less than five minutes left.
Arcadia will face Pennfield in the Class A final at Monroe Community College on Wednesday, May 22nd at 6 p.m. Penfield's sectional championship team shut out Spencerport 19-0.
The B-class semi-finals were all one-sided. In B1, Batavia defeated Olympia/Odyssey 24-0 and Athena defeated Monroe 33-0. In Class B2, Bishop Kearney defeated East Rochester 40-18 and Gananda shut out Canisteo Greenwood 26-0.
The Class B finals will also be held at MCC on Tuesday, May 21st. B1 will have a match at 5 o'clock, B2 will start at 7 o'clock.
Class AA Play-Ins: (16) Gates Chile 5, (17) Greece Arcadia 2
Leading 2-0, the Spartans scored five straight points to advance to the Class AA bracket.
In the second inning, Gates Chile's Jaylen Givens hit a double with two outs, bringing the game to two points.
In the fourth inning, Pete Delefab and Jordan Hook scored RBIs, and the Spartans added three runs on an error.
Givens, Delefeve and Hook each had two hits. Gavin Sweeney pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings for the Spartans.
Dom Zona had an RBI at the plate and pitched six innings for Arcadia.
Gates Chili (6-15) will play Victor in the Class AA pre-quarterfinals on Saturday, May 19th.
Arcadia's season ended with 2 wins and 19 losses.
