ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Friends, family and community members gathered Saturday morning for the 4th Annual Dane LeClair Volleyball Tournament at the Hotshot Volleyball Club.
Dane LeClair was a standout volleyball player at McQuaid Jesuit High School, as well as playing in Pace Bootlegger club volleyball and Loyola University Chicago.
He tragically passed away in 2019.
Dane had a deep passion for volleyball and was the coach of the University of Nebraska women's volleyball team before his death, said his mother, Rebecca.
She said her son has been playing volleyball since he was 12 years old, and this fundraiser represents his love for it. And seeing people come out to keep her son's memory alive means the world.
“For my husband and I, it's very emotional. It makes us so happy to know that people remember our son Dane,” LeClair said. “They remember how much fun he was on the court, and the way he played was infectious. I think people today are going to play with that spirit in mind. Here in Rochester and beyond. We are raising funds to further the Alpha Heart Foundation's goal of supporting the development of volleyball for people in the community.”
“His credo was to do everything with love, and that was how he lived his life. And we all strive to emulate him and those who knew him, and that That’s why we’re here,” says former Dane coach Dave Weathers. “That's the person you want to know and the person you need in your life. I'm glad I got to spend that time with him.”
All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Alpha Heart Foundation in Dane's memory. Their goal is to raise an additional $10,000 to her $24,000 already raised. This foundation benefits young leaders in the community.
His mother, Rebecca, was an anchor here at News10NBC for over 20 years.
