Alex Morgan's stay at Tottenham will be short-lived.
The U.S. Women's National Team star will return home midway through the Women's Super League season, the club announced Monday. Morgan made five appearances for Tottenham, scoring two goals (both penalties), and returned after the birth of her first child.
Morgan said in a statement: “I will be forever grateful to the club, my team-mates and the Spurs supporters who have cared so much about me and my family. “From the moment I arrived in London, I knew I was part of the first team. I realized that,” he said. -The organization of the class provided me with the opportunity to re-immerse myself in the game I love. ”
Morgan's NWSL rights are held by the Orlando Pride, who would certainly welcome the opportunity to acquire the 31-year-old striker for the start of the 2021 NWSL season. She is one of five strong USWNT players currently in the WSL, with Man City facing newly elected USWNT Player of the Year Sam Mewis and Rose Lovell. United have Tobin Heath and Christen Press. In addition to her two converted penalties, Morgan also missed her crucial spot-kick in the group play League Cup shootout against Arsenal.
Heather Cowan, Tottenham's head of women's football, said in a statement: “After Alex gave birth earlier this year, we were the club of choice for her to regain fitness and take her first steps into competitive football. , I was happy at the beginning of the season.'' “It has been a great honor to have Alex with us during this period and the whole team has gained so much from working with a player at the top of the women's game every day.
“We wish Alex all the best in her future endeavors at both club and international level as she prepares to return home with her family. She will always be welcome here at Spurs.”
This will be Morgan's second stint in Europe. She spent 2017 with French powerhouse Lyon, where she scored five goals in eight league games and seven goals in two French Cup games.
She played in the USA's friendly against the Netherlands last month and came on as a substitute after halftime, becoming the 13th player to represent the USWNT since becoming a mother. She continues her bid to break Vlatko Andonovskiy's list of 18 U.S. Olympians, and the next step in her progress will be a January camp scheduled for next month.
