MANILA, Philippines — Defending UAAP champion Adamson made a spectacular debut, pulling off a surprising upset over reigning champion California Academy in the opening match of the 2024 Shakeys Girls Volleyball Invitational League (GVIL) at the Adamson University Gymnasium in Manila yesterday.
The Lady Baby Falcons dominated UAAP Season 86 with a 14-0 record to capture their first ever women’s volleyball title, beating University of the Philippines Unified in Pool D (Shakey’s) by 25-13, 25-14.
California, without former star player Cassie Dongaro, who is already playing for the UAAP women's team at the University of the East, ended their title defense bid in a lackluster manner, losing 25-19, 28-26 to Chiang Kai Shek Institute in Pool A (Potato Corner).
Reigning UAAP Junior Most Valuable Player Shaina Nitula was second with six points, but other Lady Baby Falcons players stepped up to the plate as nine more players added points, led by Samantha Cantada (10) and Shane Ordonio (5).
For Chiang Kai Shek, middle blocker Sachie Tad led the onslaught with 13 points, while Shamila Pantoja and Julia Ninon added nine and five points, respectively.
“We are people who believe in God and have faith in God,” Cantada said. “We hope that in the future, we will improve and step up in our work.”
In the other match, La Salle Lipa came from behind to claim a stunning 18-25, 25-23, 25-20 victory over Bethel Academy in Pool A.
Vida Caringal and Liza Mamalao each scored 13 points while Althea Sumague led the team with 10 points.
