Piscataway, New Jersey – rutgers head volleyball coach caitlin schweihofer announced the promotion of Abby Deterling to associate head coach.
“I am very excited to name Abby as the associate head coach of the Rutgers volleyball program,” Schweihofer said. “She has been an invaluable asset to me, my staff and the team over the past few seasons. Abby provides high-level playing experience and brings that experience to coaching our offense. Additionally, she has a strong recruiting vision for the future of the team.'' . ”
Detering begins his third season as a member of the Rutgers staff and has been a key part of the team's tremendous growth under Schweihofer.
In his first season at Rutgers in 2022, the team got off to its best start since 1998, with four Scarlet Knights named to the all-tournament team. By the end of the season, RU had 11 entries on the list of season leaders in the Rally era.
The program progressed further in 2023. Rutgers achieved his most wins and best non-conference record since 2012, improving his set win total by 45% from the previous season. In total, the Scarlet Knights had 12 entries in the Rally Era individual season top 10 record and 13 entries in the Rally Era team top 10 record. Detering's setters had the most assists and assists per set since 2018, and the program's most kills since 2012. Additionally, RU recorded the most assists, assists per set and total kills in Big Ten play since joining the league. Back in 2014.
Before arriving at Rutgers, Detering was an assistant for three seasons at Kent State University, where he helped develop a two-time All-MAC performer and the second setter in program history to reach 1,000 career innings.While on the sidelines, the Golden Flashes led the Mid-American team.
They rank second in the conference in batting average and second in kills per set.
Detering brings Big Ten pedigree to the Scarlet Knights as a former AVCA All-American standout at Penn State. She won 12 NCAA tournaments and totaled 1,793 assists and 254 kills during her career under the tutelage of legendary coaches Russ Rose and Mary Wise. As a senior, she helped the Nittany Lions to a 33-2 record and a national semifinal appearance.
In addition to his experience at the Big Ten level, Detering also brings professional experience. Following his university career, Detering signed a professional contract with SG Kerrag Klagenfurt of the Austrian A1 League and also played for Pays d'Ex Veners.
