A man who caused a February 2023 car crash that injured the leg of a “standout” volleyball player has been sentenced, according to Missouri officials.
Daniel Riley was found guilty on March 7 on armed criminal charges of driving without a license and two counts of assault, according to court records. His attorney did not immediately respond to McClatchy News' request for comment on March 8.
Janae Edmondson, 17, was walking with her family to a hotel in St. Louis when a driver ignored a slow speed sign and sped up, colliding with their car. Her volleyball club said the car that was struck struck Edmondson.
KMOV reported that Edmondson's legs were amputated due to injuries sustained in the accident.
The club said it was an “unthinkable accident” for the Tennessee teen known for her “athletic talent.”
According to court records, Riley, 21, was driving without a license at the time of the crash. Prosecutors said he was speeding shortly before the accident, KTVI reported.
Edmonson was a senior at Smyrna High School, about a 40-mile drive southeast of Nashville. Although she graduated in 2023, she returned to her school grounds in October, walking with a prosthetic leg, McClatchy News reported.
When testifying in court, she drove to court without a prosthetic leg and showed painful injuries from the crash, WKRN reported.
“It felt like something hit me. It was warm. She lost all feeling in her body and was screaming,” according to WKRN.
Sentencing for Riley is scheduled for April 18.
