Charles County, Maryland – In honor of Black History Month, we've been highlighting African American employees who are making a positive difference right here in Charles County.
Today we're going to meet Officer Eric Auty Jr. Officer Oatey is currently assigned to Judicial Services, where his duties include executing arrest warrants related to civil and criminal matters, including child support and domestic violence.
Prior to joining CCSO, Officer Otay graduated from Salisbury University and worked as a high school history teacher for eight years in Dorchester County, where he, his wife, and three daughters lived. They eventually moved to Charles County to be closer to relatives. Officer Otay loved teaching, but he thought his skills would be a good fit for a job as a police officer in the county he loved. He couldn't agree more. He joined his CCSO in 2022.
Officer Otay said his father was his biggest influence and set him on the path to success. “My father has been a mentor and coach in the community for decades and taught me the importance of getting involved and contributing to creating positive change.” Officer Otay learned from an early age that “not all people are the same, and sometimes you need to meet people where they are to have a positive impact.” His father also taught him that in order to make a difference, he must live his life as an example for others to emulate.
Outside of work, Officer Otay has been a high school football coach at Bishop McNamara for 20 years. “Coaching allows me to continue to have a positive impact on young athletes in my community. It also allows me to take off my uniform and mentor kids through coaching. I believe strongly in showing young people that doing things is not a thing of the past.'' Additionally, Officer Otay attends New Life Church in La Plata and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Officer Otay, during Black History Month, we honor your dedication to your family, our agency, our community, and our future generations. You are a change agent for the betterment of others.
