The Central Coast is remembering football legend Joe Kapp. The Salinas native died Monday at age 85. Drea Blackwell joins us…Click here to learn more about Cupp's legacy. ### Joe Cupp…leaving his mark…on the soccer field…and…in the community… Cupp grew up in Salinas. His parents…worked in the fields…he…played college football in California…a program he loved…and then returned to…as a coach. It happened. Cupp started his professional career in the Canadian Football League, and then in 1967 he joined the NFL. Kupp led his Minnesota Vikings to the Super Bowl for the first time…a time in franchise history. He was also…the first…Latino quarterback to play in the Super Bowl. ### Cup….Golden He continued to coach the Bears…for five seasons. He was a huge inspiration to…another of our…local football legends…Ron Rivera. Rivera is from this area…so he knew Kapp's heritage…on the Central Coast…both their mothers…worked in agriculture… Here in the Salinas Valley. …Rivera….also played under the Cup….in the CAL. Rivera called Cupp…an inspiration….and that “he wanted people to know…he gave his all…always.” Told. ### Joe Cup….forever immortal….here in Salinas…this video was filmed…just last year…then…El Sauzal…middle school. . . . renamed their stadium…. in his honor. Cup was there… with his family… to take in the moment. The Cup was also a pioneer…in the NFL…for player rights…

The National Steinbeck Center announced it will host an “Author Night” to celebrate the life of Salinas football star Joe Cupp. Kupp led the Minnesota Vikings to their first Super Bowl and California to its last Rose Bowl. He passed away in May 2023. JJ Cupp and Robert G. Phelps, along with Jim Rainey of the LA Times, will read portions of a biography co-authored with Joe Cupp. There will be a Q&A and books will be available. purchase. All proceeds from book sales are tax deductible and benefit the UCB Cicanx Latinx Alumni Association and Salinas Valley Dream Academy. The event will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. Tickets to the event are free. Learn more about.
