Fort Myers Florida Warriors Ice Hockey 10 AU White Team is the Florida State Champion.
The team started last weekend's Florida Amateur Hockey State Championship (SAHOF) in Wesley Chapel with a disappointing 5-2 loss to the Jacksonville Junior Icemen on Friday. But they improved from there on Saturday, defeating the Swamp Rabbits 9-0 and the Florida Bulldogs 12-1 to advance to a rematch with the Junior Icemen in Sunday morning's semifinals.
The Warriors continued their dominance, defeating the Icemen 6-0 in the semifinals and advancing to the championship against season rivals Lakeland Junior Mocs. The Florida Warriors were considered the underdogs, having never beaten the No. 1-ranked Mocs in four regular-season games. The title game was a battle between the top two teams, and the score fluctuated until the final two minutes, but the Florida Warriors took a two-point lead and held on for the championship with a 6-4 victory. .
The team was led by MVP Logan Leen, Lucas Roby, and goaltender Griffin Irish. The roster includes Wyatt Rode, Jay LaBrie, Jackson Taylor, Nash Hanson, Aubrey Reiser, Faustino Landaboul, Jace Masti, Grady Elliott, Nolan Lawrence, Brock Frische, and Rowan Cassidy. The names are listed. The Warriors are coached by Brad Fritsche, assistant coach Dave Rohde, assistant coach Mark Leen and team manager Samantha Reiser.
“It's amazing what a group of kids can do when they come together and work as a team. It was fun watching them grow and progress throughout the season.” said head coach Brad Fritsche. “Their grit and tenacity paid off in the end and I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”
The Florida Warriors were considered a bit of a misfit team with barely enough players to start the season, but they won not only the Florida State Championship title, but an impressive 17 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties. Finished with SAHOF results. The Warriors also placed first at the MLK O-Town Showdown and third at the Can/Am Fort Myers Challenge Cup.
