University Park, Pennsylvania โ Head Coach Guy Gadowsky The Penn State men's ice hockey team released its 10-game non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 season early Monday morning, with the schedule incorporating some intriguing matchups including a trip to Alaska, a visit to the 2023 national champions and a neutral-site game in Washington, D.C., which will mark the program's first visit to the nation's capital.
The Nittany Lions will open the 2024-25 season with three consecutive away games for the second straight year, while Penn State will travel to the Last Frontier for just the second time in 10 years to play two games against Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 5 and 6.
Penn State will then turn around and travel 4,322 miles east to face 2023 national champion Quinnipiac University for the first time on Saturday, Oct. 12.
After traveling nearly 9,000 miles in just over a week, the Nittany Lions will have a week off before their home-opening series against St. Lawrence on Oct. 25 and 26 at Pegula Ice Arena.
Penn State has a week off against non-conference opponents before Big Ten play begins, then plays Colgate on the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving. This is the Raiders' first trip to Hockey Valley and the first meeting between the two schools in the current era. Colgate beat the Nittany Lions in 1947, one of three games played in the final year of Penn State's first varsity era.
Before the break, Penn State will play Army West Point for the second consecutive year in a single game on Thursday, Dec. 12, as part of the inaugural Capital Hockey Classic at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The game will serve as a prelude to the Army-Navy football game on Dec. 14 and will be the night cap of a doubleheader following an ACHA match between the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy club hockey teams.
The Nittany Lions will close out non-conference play with a home series against Canisius on Jan. 17 and 18.
Penn State has suffered just seven losses in non-conference games over the past six seasons and leads all Big Ten Conference teams with a .752 winning percentage in non-conference games and 85 wins against non-Big Ten Conference teams since the league was formed prior to the 2013-14 season.
Times and television and streaming information for these games will be announced in the coming months along with the full Big Ten schedule.
