Former National Hockey League forward and Merrimack, New Hampshire native Tim Schaller has been named assistant coach for the Rivier University men's ice hockey team, head coach Sean Millerick announced.
“We are excited to welcome Tim to our program as an assistant coach,” said Millerick, who is in his second year as head coach. “It's clear that he has a strong passion for the sport and is eager to help student-athletes reach their full potential both on and off the ice. His successful playing career speaks for itself, and I'm confident he'll bring those experiences to bear on our program as he transitions behind the bench.”
Schaller retired from professional hockey in 2023 after playing 10 seasons in the American Hockey League and NHL, including stints with the Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings. He compiled a 30-30-60 record in 293 NHL games, played in 355 minor league games and 179 games with the Rochester Americans.
Before going professional, Schaller played four seasons at Providence College, graduating in 2013. During his senior season, he served as captain of the Friars team, which finished the season with 17 wins, 14 losses and 7 ties. He scored a career-high 23 points and the team advanced to the Hockey East semifinals for the second consecutive year. He was named Hockey East Defensive Forward of the Year.
He will join the Raiders' staff ahead of the 2024-25 season, when the team will compete in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Association for the first time.
“I am very excited to join the Rivier coaching staff and can't wait to share my hockey knowledge and experience with the team,” Schaller said.
Schaller will be on the bench for the team's season opener at Keene State on Friday, Nov. 1, as the Nashua school looks to eclipse the team's three-season record of 10 wins in 2023-24.

Plymouth State has been named the IWLCA Academic Excellence Team for 11 of the past 12 years. To receive this prestigious honor, teams must have a team GPA of 3.20 or higher for the academic year.
Additionally, seven members of the team were named to the IWLCA Division III Academic Honor Roll, including junior Maddie Hunt (Littleton). To be eligible, student-athletes must be juniors, seniors or graduate students with a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or higher.
