Fairbanks – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team has released an update for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
First, the Nanooks will open the season on September 21st with their annual Blue/Gold practice game at Patty Ice Arena. A week later, the Nanooks will host the Grand Canyon Antelopes for an exhibition match, the first of three games the Nanooks will play at Big Dipper Arena in Fairbanks. The following weekend, on October 5th and 6th, the Nanooks will host Penn State for their regular season opener, concluding a three-game stint at the Dipper.
Tickets for exhibition games and regular season matches at the Dipper are general admission only.
The Carlson Center, the official home ice of the Alaska Nanooks hockey program, will host the first games of the 2024-25 season when the Augustana Vikings make their second trip to the 49th state on December 6 and 7. In September 2023, the Fairbanks North Star Borough Council announced funding to make extensive renovations to the Carlson Center. The renovations will include new lower level bleachers, a new refrigeration system for ice making, preparation and maintenance, and new NHL-sized boards and glass.
“The Carlson Center renovations, including NHL-sized ice and new lower bowl seating, will transform the way our fans, students and the community experience Nanooks hockey,” said Athletic Director Brock Ananson. “It will undoubtedly provide an enhanced experience, a faster pace and a more exciting environment for years to come. Our student-athletes will also have the opportunity to compete on the same size ice, which could be a bridge to a professional career. We are grateful and excited to continue working with FNSB on this incredible upgrade.” These upgrades will give the Carlson Center a new look. The Nanooks will return to NHL-sized ice (200 feet by 85 feet) for the first time since they permanently moved to the Carlson Center in 1990.
“We are very excited about all the changes we've made this year,” Coach Largen said. “Playing the first two weeks at Big Dipper gives the community a fun opportunity to experience Nanook hockey in a different way. The changes at the Carlson Center will make the games even more exciting for our fans and will help develop our players for future careers as professional hockey players.”
These upgrades will equip the Nanooks and Carlson Center with amenities comparable to professional level competition, providing fans and students with a quality experience that brings them closer to the fast-paced action of the game. Following the December game against Augustana, the Nanooks will host five more home games at the Carlson Center.
