Tortorella served as an assistant coach at Harvard for the past six seasons (2018-24), leading the Crimson to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2019, 2022, 2023). He oversaw defense, penalty killing and recruiting. Tortorella guided defenseman Adam Fox to a 2018-2019 season in which Fox was named a Hobey Baker Hat Trick finalist and finished second in the nation in points per game with 3.52 points. During Tortorella's tenure at Harvard, the Crimson defenseman earned All-American honors four times.
Tortorella served as head coach at Saint Anselm College in 2017-18, leading the Hawks to a 17-9-1 record and a Northeast-10 Championship. The year before, he was a volunteer assistant at Providence College, where he helped the Friars reach the NCAA Tournament.
Tortorella served as UNH's associate head coach from 2011-14, where he developed and mentored current NHL players Trevor van Riemsdyk and Brett Pesce, with the Wildcats reaching the NCAA Regional Final in 2013. Tortorella also organized and coached the Wildcats' defense and penalty kill, which finished first in Hockey East and second in the country in 2013, assisted with all aspects of recruiting efforts and developed, implemented and managed all video technology and analytics systems.
Tortorella served as head coach at Colby College for 16 seasons and remains the school's winningest coach in history with a record of 230 wins, 138 losses and 33 ties (.617). At Colby, he coached 78 New England Small College Athletic Association (NESCAC) All-Academic selections, 20 NESCAC All-Stars and 16 All-Americans and led the Mules to 10 league Final Four appearances.
Under Coach Tortorella, Colby was consistently ranked in the top 15 nationally and won its first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship in 30 years in 1997. He was named NESCAC Coach of the Year twice (2005-06, 2007-08) and New England Sports Writers Coach of the Year in 2007-08, and was a three-time finalist for National Division III Coach of the Year (1995-96, 2005-06, 2007-08).
During his first stint as an assistant coach at UNH from 1993-1995, the team made it to the NCAA Tournament both seasons and reached the regional finals in 1994.
Tortorella has also worked with USA Hockey as Director of Player Development for the New England Select Team (1997-2003, 2008-15) and twice coached the USA World Junior Team (1999, 2000). He was also heavily involved with the USA Hockey Coaches Association, serving as the association's President (2002-03). Tortorella is currently pursuing his Master Certificate, USA Hockey's highest level of coaching education certification.
Tortorella, a former standout goalkeeper at the University of Maine, began his coaching career at Brunswick High School (1984-87) before moving to Coney High School where he was a two-time Maine Coach of the Year in his five seasons there.
