Las Vegas, Nevada — Michael Hage The University of Michigan ice hockey team player was selected by the Montreal Canadiens with the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 2024 NHL Draft on Friday night (June 28).
Hage spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League. An All-USHL First Team selection, he finished fourth in the league's scoring list with 33 goals and 42 assists for 75 points in 54 games this season. He recorded 24 multi-point games last season, including a career-high five points against Madison.
At the NHL Draft Combine, Hage ranked in the top 20 in several physical fitness tests, including pro agility and continuous pull-ups.
Hage suffered an upper-body injury during Chicago's first practice of 2022, forcing him to miss six months of the 2022-23 season. He made his USHL debut on March 10 and recorded five goals and five assists in his final 13 games, helping the team reach the Clark Cup finals.
Hailing from Mississauga, Ontario, Hage will begin as a freshman at the University of Michigan in the fall.
He is the Wolverines' 34th first-round pick, and the team continues to lead the school system in all-time first-round picks. In the past five years alone, Michigan leads the way with 25 first-round picks.
Hage was recognized Thursday night at the NHL Awards as this year's recipient of the E.J. Maguire Excellence Award. First presented in 2015, the award is presented annually by the NHL to the nominee who best exemplifies a commitment to excellence through strong character, competitive spirit and athletic ability.
