Las Vegas, Nevada — Former University of Michigan ice hockey player Quinn Hughes On Thursday night (June 27), he received the Norris Trophy, given annually to the NHL's best defenseman, at the 2024 National Hockey League Awards Show in Las Vegas.
Five years after leaving Ann Arbor, the Vancouver Canucks captain led all NHL defencemen in points with 92 and 75 assists, including 17 on the power play. Hughes averaged 24 minutes, 41 seconds of ice time per game and played in all 82 games as the Canucks won the Pacific Division and finished second in the Western Conference. Only six defencemen in NHL history have recorded more assists than Hughes in a season. Hughes was on the ice for 57.7% of the team's scoring chances, finishing with a +38 record as the team won 50 or more wins for the first time since 2011.
In just five seasons, Hughes ranks second all-time in scoring by a Canucks defenceman with 333 points in 365 games.
The 100th Wolverine to make his NHL debut, Hughes began his career in March 2019 after completing his sophomore season at the University of Michigan. Hughes is the first Michigan Wolverine to win the Norris Trophy and was also a nominee for the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2020, awarded to the league's top rookie.
A first-team All-American at Michigan, Hughes was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award in 2019 and a two-time finalist for the Big Ten Conference Player of the Year award. He recorded 10 goals, 52 assists and 62 points in 69 career games and was the league's scoring leader among defensemen with 33 points in 32 games as a sophomore.
