Las Vegas, Nevada – Two more Friars were selected on Day 2 of the 2024 NHL Draft, held at the Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, June 29. Future Friar John Mustard (Oradell, New Jersey) was selected in the third round (67th overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks.Number Logan Sawyer (Orangeville, Ont.) was selected in the third round (78th overall).Number The Montreal Canadiens won the overall championship.
Mustard, a 6-foot-1, 186-pound forward, was named the USHL Rookie of the Year for the 2023-24 season after appearing in 60 games with the Waterloo Blackhawks and recording 29 goals, 27 assists, and 56 points. He ranked second among USHL rookies in points and led rookies with seven game-winning goals, seven power play goals, and 205 shots on goal. In the 2024 Chipotle All-American Prospect Game, he scored the game-winning overtime goal. Mustard also participated in the 2024 NHL Scouting Combine in June and was ranked 27th among North American skaters in the NHL's Central Scouting Rankings at the time of entering the draft. He is the eighth Friar to be selected by the Chicago Blackhawks, joining his future teammates. Taiji Harding and Connor Kelly.
Sawyer, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound forward, appeared in 59 games for the Brooks Bandits across the AJHL and BCHL, totaling 78 points with 35 goals and 43 assists. In 12 playoff games, he had 15 points with seven goals and eight assists. Sawyer also played internationally for Canada West in the 2023 World Junior A Challenge, winning a gold medal with three goals and three assists in six games. Prior to Brooks, he played one season with Stanstead College (Quebec), where he scored 61 goals and 51 assists for 112 points in 76 games. Sawyer was ranked 114th among North American skaters in the NHL's Central Scouting rankings entering the draft.Number Friar was the last player selected by the Montreal Canadiens, with the last player selected being Hayden Hawkey in 2014.
