South Carolina basketball coach Dawn Staley is everywhere.
Since winning her third national championship in April, Staley has been spotted traveling to Europe with former star player A'ja Wilson, attending multiple sporting events in Philadelphia (Staley is a Philadelphia native and an avid Philadelphia sports fan), attending several WNBA games to support former Gamecocks players, and traveling around the country recruiting future players to the South Carolina basketball program.
From now on, she will be appearing on every newsstand and trending topics list in the country.
On Thursday, Staley became the first active coach to appear on the cover of SLAM magazine alone. This is her first time on the cover alone, although she has appeared on the cover with players Aaliyah Boston, Gia Cook and Destanni Henderson in 2022. Current WNBA rookies Cameron Brink and Angel Reese will be featured in select issues of the magazine.
Staley also wrote the feature article for this 250th issue of SLAM, and what makes it even more special is that the article was written by Columbia native Lauren “Law” Dreher.
This article (“The Excellence of Dawn Staley”) is exactly what the title suggests: a beautiful tribute to and exploration of the thoughts of women's basketball's “Chief Excellence Officer.” If you're a South Carolina basketball fan or a Dawn Staley fan, this article is worth a read.
The first National Player of the Year award Staley won with the Gamecocks was A'ja Wilson, who has developed into one of the best players in women's basketball. This winter, Wilson appeared on the cover of SLAM 247, and South Carolina basketball has appeared on the cover of two of the past four SLAM issues. This is Wilson's third time on the cover, but her second time on the cover alone (she shared the cover with Liz Cambage in SLAM 223 and was on the cover alone in SLAM 240).
