Riverton A teenager was killed in a crash in the Mountain View Corridor early Thursday morning, police said.
According to Riverton Police Department spokesman Josh Lee, the teenagers were driving on 13400 South just after midnight. Lee said they ran a red light and were then struck by another vehicle heading south on the Mountain View Corridor.
The teenage driver, whose identity police have not released, was later pronounced dead. The other driver, a woman, did not report her injuries to police.
Because the accident occurred during the “100 most dangerous days” on Utah roads, Lee wanted to remind local residents how dangerous the roads can be in the summer.
“Young drivers and all drivers, you need to pay attention to how fast you're going and pay attention to the signs and signals that are pointed at you. It's so important,” Lee said. “Especially here in the summer, we all feel invincible.”
Southbound Mountain View Corridor was closed at 13400 South for several hours until investigators arrived on scene.
Lee said the speed limit in the Mountain View Corridor is 60 mph and the woman was driving a larger vehicle than the boy.
“Obviously, one of the drivers was doing everything right, but the other driver ran a red light and those sorts of things happen, so be careful,” Lee said. “Be aware of your surroundings.”
The South Valley Accident Investigation Team was on scene investigating after the crash, and Riverton Police said the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
