The Australian coach recently took charge of the Bangladesh U-19 team before taking over as manager of the USA team for three T20I matches against Bangladesh at home.
Former Australia batsman and now United States head coach Stuart Law said Bangladesh cricket had not progressed this century despite making a strong first impression on the world stage with a win over eventual runners-up Pakistan in the 1999 ODI World Cup.
“Bangladesh have not progressed in 25 years,” Low told Al Jazeera ahead of the T20 World Cup, which begins on June 1 and is co-hosted by the United States and the West Indies.
Low, who served as Bangladesh's head coach for a brief period between 2011 and 2012, has been keeping a close eye on the country's cricket scene for many years.
The Australian coach was recently in charge of the Bangladesh U-19 team before taking over as coach of the USA team and they stunned Bangladesh in three T20Is at home to win the series with one game to spare.
The Tigers, who have yet to reach the knockout stages despite appearing in every T20 World Cup since its inception in 2007, face an uphill battle this time around and will need to win at least one of their first two group matches – against Sri Lanka and South Africa – to progress to the next round.
Low said the Bangladesh Cricket Board must consider the reality that “nothing it has done so far has worked” and “we need to figure out what it needs to do to make the association work”.
“Maybe now is the time to sit down and say, 'This is how we've been doing it, but it's not working, and we're not making progress. Maybe we need to do it a little differently.'”
“This is not a disparagement of the current administration, but the administration needs to look at all sides of the game,” he reiterated.
The 55-year-old coach believes that focusing on youth will help Bangladesh achieve excellence.
“If Bangladesh can get through the youth development stage well, bring in players between 12 and 16 years old and ensure they have a good foundation in good nutrition and physical fitness, the world will see an unbeatable Bangladesh team,” he said.
