India begin training in New York, Virat Kohli yet to join team
India held their first training session at their local facility in New York ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Most of the squad took part, except for Virat Kohli, who is yet to arrive in New York and is likely to miss India's one-off warm-up match against Bangladesh at the new Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 1.
India's first match of the tournament will be against Ireland on June 5.
Gambhir reportedly 'decided' to become India's next head coach
Speculation is rife as to who will be India's next head coach. Crickbaz The paper claims that a “very prominent IPL franchise owner who is very close to the BCCI hierarchy” told it that Gautam Gambhir's appointment to the role “is a done deal and an announcement will be made shortly”.
The report also said that no official announcement has yet been made, suggesting that “negotiations are ongoing on multiple fronts between the parties, and possibly with others as well.”
Wasim Jaffer: Kohli and Jaiswal should open in T20 World Cup
Former India captain Wasim Jaffer has backed Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal as India's openers for the T20 World Cup 2024. Jaffer suggested that captain Rohit Sharma, who normally opens the batsman, should drop to No. 3 to make way for the duo.
“In the World Cup, in my opinion, Kohli and Jaiswal should open,” Jaffer wrote on X. “It depends on the opening line-up but Rohit and Sky should bat at Nos. 3 and 4. Rohit is really good with spin so I wouldn't be worried if he bats at No. 4.”

Joe Burns plays for Italy in memory of his late brother
Former Australian cricketer Joe Burns is gearing up to play for Italy as a tribute to his brother Dominic, who passed away in February. Burns, 34, played 23 Test matches and six ODIs for Australia between 2014 and 2020. After being removed from Queensland's contract list for 2024-2025, the top-tier batsman has decided to switch allegiance to Italy through his mother's bloodline.
He will now be part of the European national team for the regional qualifiers for the T20 World Cup in 2026. He announced the decision in an Instagram post on Tuesday.
