The Bear River Bruins boys volleyball team had a great season. They finished third in the Pioneer Valley League (PVL) with an 11-3 record and a 17-6 overall record.
The Bruins' last home game of the regular season before the playoffs was against the Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos, who they had yet to lose in PVL play. The Bruins defeated the Raging Rhinos 3-1 on Senior Night, suffering their first loss in the PVL before advancing to the playoffs.
The Bruins earned the No. 6 seed in the playoffs and hosted Bradshaw Christian Pride in the first round. Bear River won a tough five-set match. The Bruins' season ended in a valiant effort against Vacaville Christian in the second round with a three-set loss.
Four members of the Bruins earned first-team ALL-PVL honors. Captain Ben Myers (senior) finished second in MVP voting. Captain Austin Mertens (Junior). Luke Jeffers (Jr.); and Kyle Smith (Fr.). Two additional Bruins received honorable mention, and those Bruins were Justice Johnson (Jr.) and Asher West (Fr.).
Smith led the league in aces with 51 kills. Mertens led the team and league with 205 kills, Smith was second on team and league with 177 kills, and Jeffers was third on the team with 170 kills. Myers finished first in the PVL with 436 assists.
“The future is bright for Bear River boys volleyball!” head coach Jeff Duran said of the program. Duran, who played at Bear River as a student-athlete, took over as head coach this year, while John Good, who served as the program's head coach the previous year, remained as an assistant. “Coach Good and I competed on this same court as teammates representing Bear River, and together we bring the vision, experience, direction the players want and the program they need!”
