ALPENA — After a successful senior season at the wide receiver position, John Kurowski was given the opportunity to continue his football career at Kalamazoo College.
After a lot of hard work during the season and countless hours spent with the JUGS machine, Kurowski's efforts finally paid off in his final year, creating some of the best sports memories he has ever made at Alpena High School.
“(My favorite moment of my career) was definitely my senior season,” Kurowski said. “I've never had so much fun playing soccer, and I've never felt such a strong bond to one team. This year has been great, and I hope that feeling continues.”
For Kurowski, the decision to attend Kalamazoo was an easy one, especially after the welcoming feeling he felt during his visit to campus.
Aside from the actual university, Kurowski considered Kalamazoo home, largely because of the coaching staff and group of players already focused there.
He said the coaching staff and future teammates are outgoing and seem willing to give him the best chance to succeed while further developing as a receiver.
This pursuit of growth is always a top priority for incoming college athletes, meaning the first few years as a player are the toughest.
Quality playing time will be hard to come by, but Kurowski is looking to earn it and add whatever he can to the team to help win games.
“I'm going to bring in the first person in and the last person out. That mindset has always been my thought process and no matter what I do, that doesn't change,” he said. “I want to grow while I’m here, and I think Kalamazoo gives me the best opportunity to do that.”
Along with athletics, academics are also an important factor when entering college.
For now, Kurowski plans to complete a business degree, with the possibility of attending law school after.
As Kurowski prepares to make the transition from high school to college, he reflects on the support he's received along the way: His family, friends and coaches have all played important roles in his journey.
“First of all, I want to thank God. Without Him, none of this would have been possible,” Kurowski said. “I would always like to thank my parents for giving me the opportunities I have, my sisters for helping me get to where I am today, and all my teammates and coaches for pushing me to be the best I can be.” I would like to thank you.”
Kurowski's journey to get here has been marked by perseverance and determination. From early mornings in the weight room to late nights studying the playbook, his commitment never wavered.
As Kurowski begins his journey to college, his drive and dedication will continue to propel him forward both on and off the field.
Whether he ends up in the business world, the courtroom or the end zone, Kurowski's future is bright and his possibilities are limitless.
